Scoprite questa favolosa parte della Calabria in punta allo stivale. Vi ritroverete tra due ambienti opposti tra loro, coesistenti allo stesso tempo e nello stesso luogo; il fantastico mare della Costa Viola e le pendici Aspromontane che ripide si tuffano nella stessa. Questa mulattiera, infatti, taglia in due meta’ il Monte S. Elia, a circa 300mt di altezza. Nel passato, il sentiero e’ stato utilizzato per diversi scopi, ad es. come acquedotto, via di contrabbando di merci, via di accesso ai vari vigneti che a quei tempi ricoprivano l’intera montagna, ed altri usi ancora. Oggigiorno, e’ divenuto un sentiero naturalistico di rara bellezza per gli amanti del trekking e per bikers esperti, i quali sono alla ricerca di nuove emozioni. Camminare o pedalare qui, significa essere parte del centro esatto del Bacino del Mediterraneo, rapiti dal fantastico panorama della Costa Viola, subito sotto di voi; dallo Stretto di Messina con l’Etna sullo sfondo, guardando a sud; dall’Arcipelago delle Isole eolie, guardando vero ovest; e da Capo Vaticano, guardando verso nord. Percorrere questo sentiero, e’ emozionante durante tutto l ‘anno, ma essere qui in primavera significa assistere alla tipica e antica tradizione della pesca del pesce spada. Infatti, grazie alla sua posizione, il tracciato diventa come una sorta di teatro naturale dal quale vedere e udire i pescatori sulle “passerelle” (tipiche imbarcazioni per la pratica di questa pesca) intenti nell’arpionare il pesce spada….nelmentre il sole sparisce dietro le Isole Eolie regalandovi immagini indimenticabili. Come and discover the gorgeous scenery of this part of Calabria (the toe of the boot). You will find your selves in between two opposite environment, coexisting at the same time and in the same place; the stunning sea of the Costa Viola and the steep Aspromonte slopes diving in to it! This narrow path, in fact, runs at 300ish mts on the sea level cutting the Mt. Saint Elia in two halfs. During the past, it had been used for several purposes like aqueduct, for smuggling goods, to access the vineyards which at that times covered the whole mountain and so on. Nowadays, it’s a natural trail of uncommon beauty for trekking lovers or skilled mountainbikers who want to experience something different than usual. Walking or cycling here means being part of the very centre of the Mediterranean’s basin, absorbed by the gorgeous panorama of the Costa Viola, just below; the Strait between Calabria and Sicily with Etna on the background, looking southwards; the Aeolian Islands’ Archipelago, looking westwards; and Capo Vaticano, looking northwards. It’s always nice to be here, throughout the whole year, but being here at springtime means also to be able to assist at the typical and ancient tradition of the swordfish hunting. In fact, thanks to its position, this place becomes a natural theatre from which you can see and hear the fishermen on the “passerelle” (typical boat for this king of fishing) dedicated to harpoon the swordfish…. meanwhile the sun going down behind the Aeolian Islands gives you memorable pictures.
